The battery housings separate from each other sets of connected positive or negative plates (cells). To prevent the cells from touching each other, there is a separator in the housing to prevent a short circuit. Thus, the housings are an extremely important element that protects the individual parts of the battery, therefore they are made of acid-resistant material (usually polypropylene or ebonite).
